When should you switch to winter tyres?

The Netherlands has no legal requirement for winter tyres, but below 7°C they demonstrably offer more grip and a shorter braking distance than summer tyres.
The rule of thumb
Switch to winter tyres once the average daily temperature structurally drops below 7°C — usually mid-October to November in Rotterdam. Switch back to summer tyres from April onwards.
Why not just keep summer tyres on?
Summer tyre rubber hardens in low temperatures, drastically reducing grip — even on dry roads. Winter tyres are specifically engineered to stay soft in the cold.
Are all-season tyres a good alternative?
All-season tyres are a compromise and can work if you drive few kilometres, but rarely match the performance of a dedicated summer/winter combination.
